I started making baskets 3 years ago after my life changing events led me down a new path of discovery. My teacher is a lady called Mary Zammit who lives in Builth and holds classes which I regularly attend.
You will never stop learning new styles of weaving and obviously then interpret your own designs. Many traditional styles in other countries to be learnt.
I am 54 yrs old and from Northampton originally. I was a costume maker for 27 years for films, theatre etc. I moved around a lot - where ever the work took me. I lived for a year in South East Spain, then moved to Wales in 2004 as I had bought a 70 acre mixed species woodland in Llanfilo. In 2006 I moved onto the woodland with my partner and 6 children and lived totally off grid for almost 10 yrs with compost toilet, Solar panels a windmill and a huge battery store with a sophisticated inverter. I grew a lot of perennial veggies and herbs using our toilet compost to break down our clay soil along with our food waste compost. We kept pigs for a few years and a couple of dexter cows which then calved. 2 Shetland ponies roam the woods, keeping tracks open and bracken down. Also some rather stupid geese. We worked the woodland for that time which is how I got interested in working with willow.
